Ireland’s Medical School Expansion: 2026–2027
Ireland is set to significantly increase the number of available spots in undergraduate medicine programmes, reflecting a strategic effort to bolster the healthcare workforce amid growing national demand.
Expansion Details: What’s Changing?
1. Over 200 Additional Undergraduate Medical Places by 2026
The Irish Universities Association (IUA) confirms that, by 2026, more than 200 extra places will be available across all undergraduate medicine programmes.
2. University of Limerick (UL)
A new programme at the University of Limerick, launching in 2026, is a key component of this expansion. University of Limerick will introduce a new direct-entry medicine programme, supporting the overall increase in available medical study places
3. University of Galway (UG)
Developed in response to healthcare needs in rural areas, U Galway is launching a graduate-entry Rural and Remote Medicine stream. Full roll-out will add 48 additional medicine places per year. Undergraduate places in UG are also set to increase although this number is not currently known.
4. Current Totals and Ongoing Growth
By early 2025, 160 additional EU/EU‑Ireland places had already been added to medicine programmes, as part of a phased increase aiming for 200 by 2026. These also include arrangements with Queen’s University Belfast, introducing 50 ring-fenced places for Irish students (2023–2024), with some committing to return to the HSE after graduation
Why This Expansion Matters
- Addressing Workforce Needs: With state-backed funding and coordinated policy, Ireland is boosting its medical graduate pipeline to support the HSE and future healthcare demands.
- Regional Equity and Diversity: The UL and University of Galway expansions aim to widen geographic and socio-economic access to medicine.
- Commitment to Inclusivity: Pathways like HEAR, DARE, and mature entry maintain broader participation in medical education.
In Summary
Ireland’s medical education landscape is undergoing transformation. With over 200 new CAO places secured by 2026 through programmes at University of Limerick and University of Galway among others, the country is preparing to meet broader healthcare and equity goals. These enrolment gains will be matched by a reconfigured admissions system from 2027, shifting emphasis toward secondary school results while continuing to value essential non-academic traits.
